Restaurant Review - Cafe Morrison - South Extension, New Delhi, India

For a restaurant popular primarily for its rock culture, Café Morrison does surprisingly well on the food front too. Launched five years back when the capital lacked a place for rock-lovers to assemble, the restaurant continues its hold over the youngsters. The fact that its inspiration Hard Rock Cafe has opened up has done nothing to diminish its popularity.

The restaurant-owners, Sidharth, Aneesh and Ayush did not want to be pretentious. What they aimed for was to create a restaurant where people could gather and enjoy whatever food they wanted. Thus, what resulted was a confused menu. Be it Italian, Mexican, Indian, Continental or Chinese, you can choose to eat any one or a mix of all these cuisines. Till recently, Café Morrison had Arabic and tandoori items in the menu too, but got removed due to time constraints and huge footfalls during band performances.

I visited this restaurant in the afternoon, when there was just one other table with customers. Apparently, no one comes here in the afternoons. However, during band nights, you don’t even get a place to stand. Browsing through the menu with the restaurant representative, Nishant and the restaurant manager, Bhagwan, our orders was random. We had chilli paneer, nonveg tacos and chilly garlic prawns for appetizers. The paneer and prawns were delicious. The tacos, however, were not my taste. I prefer the softer wheat tortilla, rather than the crunchy corn ones. Accompanied with kidney beans and boiled rice, the tacos were also too healthy for me. (I thrive on junk food)

Deciding to remain unadventurous, for the main course I ordered Penne Neopolitana, a delectable tomato and garlic flavoured pasta with oregano, and chicken lasagna. Both were awesome. However, next time I go to Café Morrison I will order vegetarian lasagna. Though it doesn’t make much of a difference, I have realized I just don’t like the combination of milky cheese with chicken. Since the portion the restaurant serves are large, one does not need to order too much. An appetizer and a main course are good enough. We had really over-ordered. But on the manager’s insistence we decided to have dessert. We ordered crispy honey flat noodles with ice-cream, which ended up being the best thing we’d ordered. (Thanks, Bhagwan)

All in all, Café Morrison is worth a visit. Even if you hate rock and don’t know who Jim Morrison, you can still enjoy the food and drinks.A word of caution: Many of the drinks are seasonal, so do keep two or three orders in mind, in case they don’t have what you had originally wanted.
