Metal Detector detects a need for public liability insurance

It may come as a bit of a surprise to the country’s nearly 30,000 metal detectorists but searching for buried treasure is an activity that can call for public liability insurance cover.

As reported in thiskent.co.uk, Danny Larcombe from the Isle of Sheppey in Kent recently discovered coins and a pendant dating back to the 7th century in fields on a farm near Canterbury. Danny takes his responsibilities seriously. Through his membership of the National Council for Metal Detectorists and the Federation of Independent Detectorists, he has the protection of public liability insurance.

Whilst public liability cover isn’t obligatory, it is a very good idea. As he pointed out in the report, if you were to be responsible for causing damage to other people’s property, maybe by accidentally leaving a gate open and letting sheep escape, you could be liable. Public liability insurance would protect you against the consequences of that.
