A patent engineer is a patent law professional involved in understanding of patent law and preparation and prosecution of patent applications. A patent engineer needs to have a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. Candidates having advanced degree like Ph.D. or M.D. are given preference. Additionally, candidates for this job are required to have prior professional experience in the area of patent development. To be a successful patent engineer, a candidate must be possess excellent skill in writing and also strong reasoning ability, as this job requires the writing and interpreting of technical reports, particularly in mathematical and diagram formation. Patent engineers are under the obligation to accept challenges and resolve them through data collection, fact establishment etc. A patent engineer looks after the research and development of all patents and works for companies and individuals. He provides both administrative and scientific support. The job profile of a patent engineer involves various aspects of patent prosecution, drawing the specifications and preparing reference figures for patent applications, and giving scientific expertise during invention assessment. After an initial interview with an inventor, the patent engineer interprets and records the scope of a new invention. He confirms that there are no issues with regard to copyright or existing patent noncompliance. He creates all required documents, designs drawings and rechecks to ensure accuracy of patent applications and then he submits for review.
