Kinds of hamsters and their origin

While the rodents have been always pleased with popularity, hamsters, which zoologically belong to them, become famous as pets hardly in the last years. From scientific point of view, hamsters fall under the kind of “mice” called “myomorpha”. In very close ties of relationship, but as an independent group, they belong to the big family of the nuzzling animals or the so called “cricetidae”. To make it easier we could divide hamsters into small, average size and big and in this succession to acquaint with the kinds of hamsters. They all have five fingers on their forelegs and five on their hind legs, molar teeth with roots and front ones without any roots, which constantly grow as soon as they rub out. We aware of their extremely big and elastic, reaching the shoulders mouth sacks, which serve as a food reservoir or for transporting the food reserves. The group of mini hamsters includes two familiar kinds that are offered more and more at the animals market and are the most suitable for pets. Syrian Golden hamster Mesocricetus auratus His story of life is less of odd, than his lightening transformation in the desired pet. This little rodent spreads over Germany barely after the year of 1945. In the world of pets, he turned to a concept that will hardly be forgotten. The golden hamster is found in 1893 by an English biologist/naturalist named Waterhouse in the poor and almost uninhabited Syrian dessert. He sent the report for his scientific discovery with one hide in London and gave him the name of Cricetus auratus which is supposed to mean a golden hamster. But everything stopped with the only found representative. The underground existence and the excessive storage of foodstuffs don’t let hamster to appear on the surface very often. When the climatic conditions afford the growing of a fresh fodder and the appeared opportunities for reproduction, hamster is possible to look for a partner on the surface and to go out more often. Hence almost 40 years later the science succeeds in revealing the secret of the golden hamster in the person of professor Acharony from the University of Jerusalem. During one of his expeditions to the dry regions of north Syria – not far away from the first find near Haleb – he dug up from the whole system of dens, situated deeper than 2 meters under the ground a female golden hamster with her 12 babies. He brought the sensational find in Jerusalem, where in honors of his first discoverergave the golden hamster the name of “Mesocricetus auratus”. The science was surprised by the big generative abilities of the golden hamster, as only in one year the spouses Acharony raised by one male and three females about 150 cubs and put them into hamster cages . In the 30ies several alive representatives are brought first in England, then in the United States where was initiated their breeding worldwide. At the beginning his characteristics are being used only in the animal experiments in the labs, when meanwhile he was found to be a perfect pet. The reason for this was surely not only his nice appearance but and his friendly and humble character. His excellent appearance is distinguished for soft and smooth fur which is colored mainly in golden brawn with gentle golden yellow of fur tops upside. Underneath, he is grey white with a dark spot on the chests, which in the middle is divided by a blurred whitish longitudinal stripe. The neck, fore and hind legs and the small tail are white; the big dark ears are almost glabrous, the goggled eyes are shining black. With his length of the body between 15 and 18 centimeters, the golden hamster is considerably bigger than the tiny kinds of mini hamsters. During the last two decades, clever selectionists received a lot of cultural races which have many advantages both in their behavior and in their meaning of pets breeding. And the result - millions of hamsters that people are now breeding in crittertrail . This lightening development is a real miracle especially if we consider that the millions of golden hamsters all over the world today come from the generation of an old female who professor Anchory dug up in 1930. Finally, we shouldn’t miss to mention and the field hamster (Cricetus cricetus): Field hamster Cricetus Cricetus With a length of the head and body almost 28 centimeters, he belongs to the big hamsters and in addition to this as a local kind of hamster, pertains to the mammals with one of the most beautiful coloration in Europe. Due to the many prejudices, he turned into an extremely pursued creature in the agriculture, although in reality he even is an useful animal as both with the field fruits he “steels”, he destroys and many from the so called ‘harmful insects”. He is one “frowning lonely creature”, who threatens even his fellows if they cross his territory. His permanent mistrustfulness and firm readiness for defense are necessary natural regularities that serve his survival. That’s why this big and nice field hamster with a strong physique is not suitable for domestic breeding.
