Researchers in America find that smoking cessation can promote healthy arteries and reduce chance of suffering from heart disease. Smoker can get the result after a year of smoking cessation.
This study result published on the new Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Smoking Cessation for a Year
Researchers, who work in the Madison Medical and Public Health School and the Tobacco Research and Smoking Cessation Centre of University of Wisconsin, carried out a joint smoking cessation research to ask for over 1500 smokers smoking cessation. There are five methods for smoking cessation, including nicotine patches, nicotine pastilles, wellbutrin, use of nicotine patches and pastilles at the same time, or use of wellbutrin and nicotine pastilles at the same time.
The associated press quoted a cardiologist James Stan as saying: “After a year, 36% of the research objects will quit smoking successfully.”
Before and after this research, researchers have measured the FMD of the brachial arteries of the research objects respectively. Researchers fastened the forearms of the research objects by using tourniquet, and unfastened after a few minutes, then measured by using ultrasonic wave. The FMD of the brachial arteries is one of the main parameters to measure whether the brachial arteries are healthy, which is closely relevant to the EDD of heart arteries and can predict their risk for cardiovascular diseases.
Improve Arteries
The correlation result shows that after the smokers quit smoking for a year, the FMD of the brachial arteries can be improved to 1%.
Stan said: “Though the smokers put on weight, but the function of their arteries can be improved. This suggests that smoking cessation is good for blood vessel health and can reduce the risk for heart disease fit and suffering from cardiovascular disease.”
Stan thought that, though 1% is a small figure, but this is a prominent improvement and is of great importance in clinical practice which means that the chance of suffering from the cardiovascular disease will reduce to 14%.
“Improve inch by inch in a year”, Stan said, “The problem is that wether the condition of someone giving up smoking will be better?” researchers plan to continue retrack this research for two years.
Many people know that the smoking cessation will reduce the chance of suffering from carcinoma of the lungs. But the first large-scale clinical test proves that the smoking cessation will promote arteries health and protect your heart.
