Caution: always be prepared when riding a BMX

A BMX bike will enable the average bike rider to get from A to B just as easily as he or she would a standard bike. Indeed, some riders, particularly younger ones, may wish to own a BMX bike merely as a cooler-looking alternative to a conventional bike. The most exciting aspect of a BMX bike however is its potential to lift and propel a rider against gravity. In the case of a racing BMX bike this can enable the rider to dash across bumpy track circuits against the clock. With a freestyle BMX bike on the other hand, the performance of dazzling tricks both in the air and on the ground is always a tantalizing prospect.

This potential for acrobatics is inherent in the design aspects of BMX bikes, all of which have evolved after years of competitive racing and stunt riding. These include a frame and seating area that are often closer towards the ground to enable greater control by the rider; and a minimum number of components, including a single gear, to minimise weight and thus facilitate quicker and easier handling.

For these reasons it is always advisable to approach BMX riding fully prepared in case the opportunity for such advanced riding arises. This means always wearing fully protective gear, even when the intention is just to ‘ride around’; the temptation to try out complex moves or tricks will always be there. It is always strongly advisable however to be equally prepared not to rush fool-heartedly into trying out such advanced manoeuvres but to practice them slowly and carefully in an appropriate environment such as a local authority BMX park.

At bmx.co.uk we have a full range of great value, quality BMX bikes, together with quality protective gear such as helmets, pads and wrist bands, to make sure riders are always fully prepared when out riding them.
