Top cities to visit on Canada breaks

Canada is often overlooked by travellers in favour of its neighbour the United States, but this northern nation is relatively equal in size and just as varied. While many are drawn to Canada's rugged mountains, great lakes and verdant forests, its major cities offer excellent quality of life and attractions to tempt visitors of all tastes - whether you're looking to get involved in the local nightlife or just want a place to unwind.

Toronto is often the first choice for those visiting Canada - despite this cosmopolitan city not being the nation's capital. Its impressive range of museums and restaurants makes it a haven for culture lovers, and it's still close to outdoor experiences at Lake Ontario and spectacular Niagara Falls. Toronto is one of the world's most environmentally friendly cities to boot, and home to a number of subcultures, all of which contributes to a welcoming atmosphere rarely experienced in such a large and bustling city.

For a taste of French Canada, Montreal is the ideal starting point, and easily reached from the USA when heading north from New York. With its own Notre Dame cathedral in the historic centre, Montreal has a distinctly European flavour that sets it apart from most other cities on the North American continent, but it's still distinctly Canadian through and through. Quebec City is close by, the provincial capital of French Canada, where history buffs can find even more to enjoy when walking its cobbled streets and visiting 17th century buildings. Quebec's Old City is also renowned as one of the last walled cities in the world.

Despite being the capital city, Ottawa is less frequently visited by those taking Canada holidays, which is a shame as this cultural powerhouse is one of the best places to get a true taste of Canadian life. This green city is home to numerous public parks, and if you're a fan of ice skating you can look forward to setting out on the world's longest natural skating rink when the Rideau Canal freezes over.

Last but by no means least, enjoy a chilled-out Canadian break in Vancouver, the home of Canada's café culture. Just north of Seattle, this British Columbian city is set amidst picturesque natural beauty that makes day trips into the surrounding area a must, especially if you're looking forward to a world-class skiing break at Whistler or to spend time whale-watching on the coast.
