Hen Nights: Celebrating the End of Spinsterhood

Most people are of the opinion that the Hen party was actually modeled upon the Stag Parties and that it does not have any real origins. That the tradition of the bride having fun with her friends was just a replica of the bachelor parties. But that is not true. Here are two stories which are believed to be true as the origin of the Hen Night. Here they are:

Firstly, it is said that the history of hen nights can be traced back to Netherlands. A poor man fell in love with the beautiful daughter of a miller and he wanted to marry her. But he had no money to buy gifts for the girl and her family to impress them. Needless to say the father was not at all ready to give away his daughter’s hand in marriage to a man who was poor.

The girl too was heartbroken and her friends were greatly distressed seeing her like this. So they went to everyone’s house and bought the rest with whatever they could and took it to the girl’s father. This is anecdote about Hen Night goes.

The other version is that in the Eastern and Middle Eastern countries, “henna”- a special herb is crushed and applied on the girl’s hand in intricate patterns to keep the innocent bride from any misfortune or evil. The term “hen” is thus derived from the word “henna” and there is great entertainment on this auspicious day, organized by the female members of the family and friends of the bride.

So this is how it is believed that Hen Nights came into being and today they are celebrated all over the world.
